Taking a road trip on a Harley comes with some extra planning. If you're hoping to hop on the Harley and run away this summer, there's a few extra things that you'll want to plan for. Here, you'll find a few tips that'll help to ensure that your trip is full of great times and without mishap.

Lodging

You might have it in your head that you'll be able to map out the trip and make it from one point to the next point without any problems arising. As great as it would be to be able to book all of the hotels that you'll be staying at ahead of time, the only one that you should book before you leave is the final destination hotel — not those that you'll be staying at while you make the trip.

You see, if the weather turns bad, you might not make it as far as you had hoped. If the weather is nice, you might just want to keep on going. You can find overnight hotels on the way, in most cases, without any problems.

Tip: To avoid running into problems finding overnight lodging, map out the trip and do an event search for those areas. If there are big events being held at the time that you'll be traveling through the area, you may have a difficult time finding a room for the night — you may want to adjust your route to avoid busy areas.

On the Road

Getting beat up by the wind on the highway will take more out of you than you think. Those big trucks rushing by, throwing all of the road debris up at you isn't exactly the best part of riding, but with the right gear, it won't be much of an issue for you for this trip.

Make sure that you're covered from head to toe; don't leave any exposed skin. If you have leathers, wear them. They will block a lot of the wind and protect you if there's an accident.

Invest in good rain gear and a cover for your bike. Rain can pop up at any given time, so you need to be prepared for it. If you have good rain gear, you can push through light rain and get to a safe place to stop. When you stop, you can quickly cover the bike to keep it from getting soaked and to protect the contents of the bags.

Get out there and enjoy riding your Harley. With the right planning, your trip can be as wonderful as you hope it will be.
