Chances are you aren't going to hang out in the cabin all day, and you might want to explore the area around you. The weather in Tennessee can change quickly – even in summer — and it's a good idea to be prepared for it. If you are coming from the city and are heading into the Smoky Mountains or off the beaten path for an adventure, there are some things you need to pack as well.

What should you pack for a Tennessee river cabin vacation? Here are a few tips.

Warm Jacket

Packing a warm jacket for your trip to a Tennessee river cabin is a must. Winters can be colder than expected, and even the summer can have a chill to it, especially in the evenings.

If you plan on hiking or taking a trip to the Smoky Mountains or one of Tennessee's byways, the temperatures will be lower at more often. The evenings can be cooler even during the summer, and the weather is changeable and can be unpredictable.

Hiking Gear

Tennessee has a beautiful countryside to go exploring and hiking in, especially along the Tennessee River. If you plan to go hiking, don't forget to pack hiking gear along with you. Some cabins might include the gear with your rental, but if they don't, you don't want to miss out because you left your gear behind.

Make sure you have walking poles to help with those steeper hills and trails. Have a water bottle or two that can hold a good amount of water. The trails don't have refilling stations, so make sure the bottle can carry enough so that won't be a problem. Hiking boots or sturdy shoes are a must, too. They will keep you comfortable and give your feet support while you explore.

Don't forget to pack sunscreen. The summer sun can be hot, and in some areas, there isn't much escape from it. The winters also can provide little sun relief.

Map Of The Area

Packing a map of the area you plan to visit and explore is a good idea. Some areas of Tennessee, especially the Smoky Mountains, don't have reliable cell phone service, so if you plan to go hiking and exploring, you could get lost without one.

If you usually rely on a GPS system in your car to get you places, a physical map will be your better option in more remote areas. This is especially true if you are heading into the mountains for the day.
